Improved integration within organisations critical to digital success

Embracing a culture of change is a key element that organisations need to adopt in today's fast-paced digital era.

Digital transformation is helping many organisations to achieve greater levels of operational efficiency, innovation and business success. However, resistance to change is often at the heart of why some companies are slower than others to adapt in today's rapidly changing world. Here we discuss some of the common problems many firms face.

One issue that may delay a company's progress towards digital goals is limited integration between different departments or siloing. A lack of coordination, collaboration and common purpose between different functions of the business – for example, between management and IT – can foster a culture of mistrust, reduce agility and lower productivity.

One issue that may delay a company's progress towards digital goals is limited integration between different departments.

Bringing disparate functions closer together

A recent article by McKinsey suggested that organisations looking to embrace new technology review their processes and prioritise a couple of changes:

1. Change from uncoordinated siloed efforts to an integrated operational-improvement program based around journeys.

2. Change from piecemeal individual approaches or capabilities to a multiple sequential lever approach to achieve greater impact.

McKinsey argues that different functions and processes within the business can be brought closer together to meet transformation objectives and improve business performance with the aid of technology.

Letting go of legacy products and solutions

Another issue we often see is that many large organisations tend to be averse to the idea of adopting new systems or tools. Known as 'Not Invented Here Syndrome', this is a condition whereby companies favour legacy products and solutions developed in-house, even though external options may be superior.

By doing away with department silos, companies have a better chance of digital business success.By doing away with department silos, companies have a better chance of digital business success.

The key is to create a culture that embraces change. By doing so, companies can more easily cast aside outdated systems and enjoy far better digital offerings. Improved internal communication is key to nurturing an environment that fosters digital transformation.
